Studio Visit with Ann Mehaffy

Visiting the studio of Ann Mehaffy in Baker City. Set within her beautiful garden on the edge of town, Ann mostly creates paintings in this space although it is set up to pursue the occasional sculptural piece and many other inspirations. With a background in printmaking and watercolor, Ann is currently working with printer’s ink, acrylics, and graphite in an abstract expressionist style. Most of her works are on paper from her printmaking days.  She sells out of her studio. Ann says “I mostly create without much thought to audience or purchasers. I make things for the pleasure of tapping into what I call THE DEEP, where I find unexpected rabbit holes, glorious trails, maddening frustrations and beautiful successes, all coming from the unique experience and expression of who I am.”

Many of Ann's pieces are reworkings and reconsideration of earlier works. 


This large piece was started in mid-March, just about the time we all went into quarantine and started our unknown and unexpected journeys with the pandemic...this painting has evolved during this time.

  Printmaker Mason Cessna works out of a spacious studio in Churchill School in Baker City.   Mason has worked on different types of print processes in his career, and also experiments with ceramics. Currently he is doing woodblock reduction printing – requiring multiple stages and colors. As an “artist in residence” at Churchill he is helping establish Churchill Press -   a community focused printmaking project. Artist info to join the 2022 tour

  Baker Artists Tour is scheduled for Saturday October 8 2022 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.   Our goal is to help people connect with some of our local artists, learn more about studios, galleries to purchase local art, and the growing collection of public art created by local talent.  If you are an artist who would like to join the 2022 Tour, deadline to be included in the map/guide (printed and online) is August 20th.    Please write to bakerartguild@gmail.com  for more information.  If  your studio is too far out of town or in some way not suitable for visitors and you'd still like to participate, you can get a display table at Crossroads-Carnegie Art Center.  Please call them at 541-523-5369 to get more info and reserve a spot.  This year, it is free to participate.  Event will include a self guided tour for the public, and a scavenger hunt of public art, studios, and galleries available through a downloadable app.

Nancy Coffelt Studio

Visiting Nancy Coffelt at her studio in a historic building in downtown Baker City.  High ceilings and natural light make for a great space for Nancy to create her colorful paintings.  She has a background in writing and illustrating children’s books, and has worked in a variety of mediums. Some of her Papier Mache sculptures can be seen around town, including City Hall.  Currently Nancy is creating acrylic gouache paintings mainly of animals with a whimsical bent.  She does many commissions and memorial pieces.  You can find her work at Peterson’s, Crossroads-Carnegie Art Center, and Royal Artisan in Baker City, and via her website:  https://www.yessy.com/nancycoffelt/gallery.html   An alleyway entrance.
